The difference between studying law and law in practice can be quite a contrast. As such, there can be a steep learning curve for students who enter the practice.
It might also be quite challenging to identify the practice area that is suitable for each person.
Lucia joined Norling Law as a Law Clerk over summer and in this interview we discuss what it is like to enter the practice and what it is like to clerk at Norling Law.
Originally from Auckland, Lucia embarked on her legal voyage in Wellington, pursuing an LLB.
Her academic journey, filled with theoretical knowledge and legal principles, then took a practical turn when she joined a law firm as a summer clerk. This experience was poised to challenge her perceptions and steer her career path in new directions.
One of the standout aspects of Lucia’s clerkship was her access to eight different mentors. This diverse mentorship provided her with a rich tapestry of insights and learning opportunities. The varying styles, approaches, and specialisations of her mentors enabled Lucia to view the legal profession through a multifaceted lens, appreciating its complexity and the myriad pathways within it.
Contrary to her expectations, Lucia found the law firm’s environment far from intimidating. The firm’s culture, characterised by its inclusivity and team-oriented ethos, played a crucial role in her positive experience. Lucia’s feeling of being an integral part of the team, despite her youth and relative inexperience, underscores the firm’s commitment to fostering a supportive and engaging workplace.
Perhaps the most pivotal moment in Lucia’s clerkship was her exposure to insolvency and restructuring law. Initially enamoured with the idea of practising criminal law, inspired by popular media, Lucia found herself intrigued by the complexities of the insolvency law. This unexpected interest led her to reconsider her academic and career plans, demonstrating the profound impact practical experiences can have on a law student’s aspirations.
Lucia’s involvement in client meetings and real-world legal disputes provided her with invaluable hands-on experience. Such opportunities are rare in the conventional law school setting but are crucial for understanding the practical application of legal theory. These experiences not only enhanced her legal acumen but also solidified her confidence and interest in pursuing a legal career.
As Lucia reflects on her summer clerkship, her gratitude for the learning opportunity and the doors it has opened is evident. Her journey highlights the transformative potential of practical experience in the legal field, encouraging law students to seek out clerkships and internships.
Lucia’s journey from a law student to a summer law clerk and her exploration of insolvency and restructuring law exemplify the unexpected paths that can shape a legal career. Her experience serves as a testament to the value of mentorship and hands-on learning in discovering one’s passion.
